Strata Vessels | 2024

Set of 12 Ceramic Vessels, Dimensions Variable.

The series of strata vessels are made from dredged-up waste in the clay traps in the studios at the EKWC in the Netherlands, produced during a residency there in 2024. Ceramics as a medium is resource-intensive in all stages of the process, from processing clay through to firing the kilns - this is exacerbated by the use of scarce virgin materials including metals such as lithium and cobalt which are mined and shipped globally in ethically dubious circumstances. These vessels attempt to valorise the waste created during the ceramic process - a mixture o different clays, glazes, paper, hair and other stinky bits which burn off after firing. Each piece in the series represents a unique combination of materials found in each studio, showing the beauty of what can be made from waste and simultaneously serving as a time capsule of the artists who have been at the residency in the past.
