Objectoception | 2017

Objectoception (neologism): the perception of oneself in space through the perspective of objects.

This project explores the application of philosophical concepts of phenomenology and object-oriented ontology to experimental design processes.

Phenomenology is the study of the subjective experience of the world (seeing things as humans). Object-oriented ontology is the idea of a world where humans and objects share the same ontological status.

Objectoception was an experiment to see whether we could link one's proprioception to the perception of external objects. What would be the effects of de-centring one’s perspective of the world around them? Participants were made to complete a simple task whilst observing themselves from three different third-person perspectives.

This experiment was conducted as part of the Elastic Octopus module of the Innovation Design Engineering MA/MSc at the Royal College of Art & Imperial College.
