LUCA (Ribs), porcelain face

LUCA Series | 2024

Porcelain and red stonewate laminate, dimensions variable

I was thinking about LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor) – the speculative, ancestral single-celled organism at the root of the evolutionary tree, the first organic lifeform to emerge from our pre-biotic, non-organic past.

This inspired a series of works whose final, organic form are be determined by the transformation of non-organic matter through the change in atmospheric conditions within the kiln. The process starts from a laminated sheet made of two slabs of clays with radically different shrinkage rates. Assembled and dried flat, this tension gives the form its curvature during firing.
