“The function of art is therefore an extension of the brain – the seeking of knowledge in an ever-changing world” - Semir Zeki, Art and the Brain

Adumbrations | 2018

Capturing ephemera in the museum of the future.

Adumbrations is a proposal for the role of data in the future museum. The central question posed is: how will digitisation affect the museum of the future? The project proposes that improvements in digital technology will allow museums to capture and store ephemeral interpretations of objects on display, allowing one to visualise changes in social meaning over time. The installation has two ancillary aims: to promote visitor engagement with museum’s digital collections, and to allow promote visitor engagement of objects beyond the plaque.

The concept was developed through interviews with archivists, museum staff and visitors at the Victoria & Albert and Science Museums. This culminated in a public experiment at Hyde Park, where people were asked to sketch the Albert Memorial. Their sketches were then overlaid and compiled.
